Manohar Gajanan Joshi, he was born on 2 December 1937 and then he passed away on 23 February 2024. He was a big leader from Maharashtra and he was working with that party called Shiv Sena. He did many top jobs in politics. Like, one time he was Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999. Then later he became Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004. Also before that, he worked as Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2002. So we can say he was doing some of the highest-level government jobs in India.

After he died in 2025, Indian government gave him that big civilian award called Padma Bhushan. That is third-biggest honor in India for public work people. So this shows how important he was.
Early Days and Study Time
He was born in a village called Nandvi in Raigad district Maharashtra. His family was Marathi-speaking and from Brahmin caste. He did college from University of Mumbai and there he studied Arts and then Law also. Then in 1964 he got married to one lady named Anagha Joshi. They had three children together.
Now one of his granddaughters is actress also. Her name is Sharvari Wagh and she acted in one Bollywood film “Bunty Aur Babli 2” in 2021. So his family also became famous later.
Before Politics – Business Work
Before he became big politician, Joshi was doing education business. He started something called Kohinoor Technical Institute. That was to teach skills like plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairing to people who were semi-skilled and needed job. So it helped poor youth to learn work and earn.
That Kohinoor thing became big and started in many cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur. Then he also did building construction business. After that he started one business school called Kohinoor Business School and also hotel management college called Kohinoor-IMI School of Hospitality Management in Khandala. So we can say he was businessman first and then politician.
Political Start and Climbing Up
So in 1968 Joshi jumped into politics properly. He became councillor in Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Then he became Mayor of Mumbai in 1976–77. That was his first big post.
In 1972 he became Member of Maharashtra Legislative Council and stayed there till 1989. Then he won election from Dadar in 1990 and became Member of Legislative Assembly till 1999.
Became Chief Minister of Maharashtra
Then big thing happened. In 1995 Shiv Sena and BJP won election in Maharashtra. So Manohar Joshi was made Chief Minister. He was the first CM from Shiv Sena party. That time was big deal because Shiv Sena never had CM before. He stayed CM till 1999.
Delhi Politics – Lok Sabha and Minister Work
In 1999 Joshi got elected to Lok Sabha from Mumbai North Central. Then Atal Bihari Vajpayee gave him job as Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2002. After that in 2002 he became Speaker of Lok Sabha which is one of top positions in Indian Parliament. He did this job till 2004.
But in 2004, he lost election. Still in 2006 he entered Rajya Sabha and stayed MP there for six years.
Still Active in Later Years
In 2022 even though he was old, he was still involved in lawmaking discussions. He became patron for National Legislator Conference (NLC Bharat). So he never left politics fully.
Death
Then sadly on 23 February 2024, Manohar Joshi passed away in Mumbai. He was 86 years old. Cause was cardiac arrest and other health issues. After death he got Padma Bhushan in 2025 for lifetime work.
