Aslam Shaikh: The Steadfast Congress Leader from Malad West

February 8, 2026 by Swagat M Leave a Comment

Aslam Ramzanali Shaikh is a senior Indian politician from Indian National Congress (INC) in Maharashtra. He was born on 5 November 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He did not come from any big political background. Life was simple, so he moved slowly into politics, step by step, by doing local work first.

He is mainly known in Malad West. We can say that since he stayed close to people there, then his political base became strong. He kept meeting locals, listening to daily problems, so people continued to support him.

How People See Him

His image is more about service, not only about elections. He listens to people, talks about their problems, and raises local issues in the assembly.

He mostly focuses on urban problems, basic infrastructure, and public welfare. Because of this, he still has influence in Malad West, even though Mumbai politics is very competitive now.

Political Career

Aslam Shaikh entered proper elections in 2009. He was elected as Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Malad West. That seat was new at that time, so winning was not easy.

After that, he won again in 2014, 2019, and 2024. This shows that even when rivals became stronger, then he managed to survive and win again.

From 2019 to 2022, he worked as a Cabinet Minister in the Maharashtra Government under Maha Vikas Aghadi led by Uddhav Thackeray. He handled departments like Textiles, Fisheries, and Ports Development.

He was also Guardian Minister of Mumbai City District. During that period, he had to coordinate between civic bodies and the state government, especially since the city was facing many problems.

In the assembly, he stays active. He asks questions, joins debates and keeps pushing issues related to Malad West.

Local Work And Ground Connection

Before becoming an MLA, he worked as a corporator in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). That experience mattered a lot because it taught him how city problems actually work.

He still stays involved in ground issues like drainage, footpaths, roads and basic civic facilities. Many locals feel he is approachable, since he sometimes comes personally instead of only sending officials.

Because of this, people from different backgrounds in Malad West continue to support him.

Work During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aslam Shaikh played an active role as Guardian Minister in Mumbai. Even when he tested positive and went into isolation, then he continued work through calls and coordination.

He worked with civic authorities to make sure relief and healthcare support reached people. For many locals, this period improved his image as someone who stays involved during crisis.

Overall Picture

Aslam Shaikh’s journey shows grassroots politics, steady effort, and survival in tough urban politics. His story proves that in Mumbai, local work and daily issues matter as much as big political speeches.

At a time when Congress is trying to stay relevant, leaders like Aslam Shaikh help keep the party connected at ground level in cities like Mumbai.
